What to watch this Valentine's Day? Some Digital Love

We all love watching movies that are soppy and cute, packed with tears and romance. The hopeless romantic in us wants that perfect cliché ending.

The cynic in me wants to also resort to this love in the air infectious energy surrounds the second month of the year. So I ended up watching those lovey-dovey movies again; while I watch these, I decided to do this public service and share my list of movies that I am to watch/watched/watching this month.

Pretty woman

Yeah yeah! We have watched it a million times, but every time Vivian falls in love with Edward, it leaves the fluttering feels in your stomach. It sure is the best love fable of the love fables.

In a very fairytale-like setting, Edwards meets Vivian (an escort) on a roadside asking for direction and was intrigued by her knowledge of cars. He then hires her for the day (just for the company)  that kept stretching for the next day and then more, until his stay in the city.

Edward takes Vivian through his daily meetings and parties while she learns how to fit in without attracting attention (which is not always successful).

The sly smiles that we catch from a cold-hearted millionaire (Edward) are signs that slowly but surely, he is falling for her. No matter how much eyes we roll on cliché, but the ending of the movie, when he climbs all the way up for her, makes us swoon.

You have got mail

This sure is the most beautiful story from so many chick-flicks that starred Tom hanks and Meg Ryan together (at least for me).

For starters, it is refreshing to see the way the internet worked back then, the anticipation, the connecting process, and writing email. Meanwhile, you hear the monologue of Meg Ryan's thoughts is an additional plus.

Katherine Kelly and Joe Fox are owners of book stores, and the dialogue in the movie is literacy-rich and articulate. Katherine inherited an intimate boutique style book store while Joe Fox, son of a millionaire, owns a chain of cooperate book store chain that opens right across the street.

While they exchange emails and find they connect to each other exceptionally well, they are business rivals in real life. They aren't aware of the real identities due to the screen names they selected while emailing each other.

After months of exchanging emails, they decided to meet each other, and on seeing its Katherine Kelly, he was shocked. He chose not to reveal his identity and starts meeting her as Joe Fox.

Katherine, who despised Joe Fox to the core, was reluctant at first to be even civil to him for a casual meet up but then started warming up to him. They would often meet, dissecting numerous hilarious and obnoxious reasons why her pen pal failed to show up.

Until the end of the movie, Joe decided to reveal his true identity and emailed as the pen pal to meet her finally. Inwardly, Katherine Kelly was also falling for Joe Fox, on meeting him in the park, she caved in with that beautiful Meg Ryan smile.

It's a beautiful movie, with Meg Ryan's nonchalant attitude, her smile, and Tom Hank's comebacks keep you gripped till the end.

What If (2013)

What if, or in some countries known as The F Word, is another one of my favorites that features Daniel Redcliff as Wallace and beautiful Zoe Kazan and Chantry.

Chantry, an animator, is amazingly good at what she does, while Wallace is between odd jobs because he quit his medical college after finding out his long-time girlfriend cheating on him.

The occasional appearance of Chantry's doodles of a sad girl with wings that transitions the movie from one scene to another is very refreshing.

As the movie progresses, Chantry and Wallace develop an innocent friendship. While fate has it, they kept meeting each other; the conversation is exceptionally snarky and obnoxious, bonding over Fool's Gold and Feces of Celebrity.

While Wallace tries to get over his past, Chantry's relation with her boyfriend grows and then suddenly breaks. The movie twirl around new turns, sometimes going spiraling out of control, with falls from the window and broken nose; but then again, it's all perfect in the end.

Your name (2016)

If you are a fan of Studio Ghibli movies, you will definitely love this one. This animated drama is a hopelessly beautiful story of two teenagers who keep swapping bodies and live each other's lives.

The swap was unexplained; frequency and occurrence were also random, leaving Mitsuha and Taki initially in a baffled state of mind. Later they started understanding it's no dream and figured out how to communicate through notes, text messages, or even leave messages on skin.

Things complicate when these two take matters into their hands and want to see each other as they have developed a fondness. It sure is a Sci-fi romance fix in one go, with beautiful animations, amazing score, and story.

A star is born (2018)

Pain, tears, beautiful scores are some words I would use to explain this movie. I was reluctant to watch the film at first; I'm not too fond of the idea of singers acting as actors. But who would know Lady Gaga was so fantabulous!

Ally (Lady Gaga) is a struggling artist, and Jackson (Bradley Cooper) is a well-known musician. He finds her one day out of sheer luck, and cupid doing his 'loosing-the-arrows-crap' he does.

Jackson takes Ally with her to a concert, and the duo sings a song; that song is my point of persuasion to watch the movie (I heard it on the radio and decided to give in a watch the movie).

The movie portrays the harsh reality of the world of fame; while climbing up to catch the stars, the other is going down in the shallows and pits of darkness.

The movie is a beautiful watch; however, keep the tissues and chocolate bar handy.
